[Resources] Meaning of Platform

Platform means the physical, virtual, or institutional environment provided to facilitate transactions or interactions by multiple groups of users, other than the dictionary definition of where they originally get on and off trains. In another sense, tangible and intangible facilities that provide a common base for the supply of goods and services in the market. It also defines the physical space or environment provided for different customer groups to trade or interact with, as well as virtual or institutional space or environments. However, the term is now used to refer to the framework that forms the basis for a particular device or system.

An online platform refers to the exchange place on the Internet that is provided to those who sell or want to purchase goods or services. In the case of offline platforms, space constraints, such as the limits of suppliers of goods (services) and capacity personnel, were strong. However, with the development of ICT, the platform has expanded to mean a space where numerous products and people interact and create new values without restrictions on space, while the online platform extends to a place where diverse Internet services and content are created and distributed, including service interworking through application programming interfaces (APIs), to provide a basis for communication between consumers and service providers. The advent of the Internet has revolutionized the scalability of the platform. The Internet allows many consumers and suppliers to meet in virtual space at relatively low cost, freeing them from inefficiency issues such as time and space constraints. Furthermore, there emerged a platform of operators that addressed the diverse economic and social needs of numerous consumers gathered on the Internet and offered alternatives from a business perspective.

The advent of these platforms has enabled the delivery of new services that did not exist offline, as well as the ability of the carrier to provide a virtual space for the consumer to find the provider or customer of the goods or services it wants or owns. The characteristics of online platforms in contrast to offline platforms include strong externality, scalability, and low physical costs of entering the platform. Offline platforms are based on the economic benefits generated by the number of consumer groups, but online platforms are less expensive to participate in the market through membership and the spread of the results is much faster than offline. In addition, the nature of the platform in which functions are performed in an intangible virtual space is very broad and scalable in areas that can be used for economic or non-economic purposes, which are expanding with the development of new information and communication technologies and changes in society.

Of course, although the nature and purpose of the platform may vary, and the high and low costs of proliferation may be a relative concept, the platform's ability to open the platform at a low cost is an attractive advantage. The scope of communication over the Internet has been continuously expanded. The development of information processing technology, in which various information can be digitized and delivered, stored and processed, has structured expanded communication, bringing about fundamental changes. Internet and information digitalization technologies have made it possible for anyone to distribute and use information at a very low cost without having to go through traditional media outlets. The distribution of goods and services, which previously required physical and human resources for face-to-face communication, is also now more frequent online. In addition, a platform that mediated communication in a manner that was previously not seen before in quantity and quality emerged as the main agent of innovative services. The services finally offered by digital platforms such as Internet portals, e-commerce and Uber and Airbnb are not fundamentally different from those offered by paper newspapers and traditional offline distribution structures, taxi and lodging businesses.

However, new communication and information processing across spatial and temporal barriers has resulted in different ways in which services are personalized and delivered. From the point of view of production, this is a change in the way resources are procured and combined to provide that service. As online develops from wired web to mobile, spatial constraints are overcome and combined with the characteristics of real-time communication with online, the advent of new services and existing business areas are greatly expanded. However, the limitations of mobile, i.e. the small screen compared to the web and the limited amount of information that can be transmitted, have the weakness of users to understand the contents sufficiently. Added to this the deceptive tactics of abusing the platform, side effects that can cause users to be mistaken or restricted from making the optimal choice are also appearing. The concept of a platform is basically to broker or link transactions. Online platforms, which used to provide only a trading place, are making active efforts to minimize the side effects of platform-based transactions, as well as their role in connecting demand and supply with the development of digital technologies. A new platform model based on digital technology enables people, organizations and resources to be organically connected and exchanged for value.
