Yes, it’s the Hanbok!

 

Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) was casually worn during the Joseon Dynasty, and is a type of clothing that’s unique to Korea. Given the trend of the times, it’s no longer worn as casual wear; however, some bring it out every once in a while, such as during the New Year or Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day).

 

With a traditional style and elegance, Hanbok differs according to season. There exists various kinds of materials and composition; as such, you’ll have to consider factor these in when purchasing a Hanbok. Moreover, because it is only used on special occasions or holidays that need formality, it isn’t frequently used and may be burdensome to purchase .

 

Given this, we are carrying out a Hanbok Sharing Project in Gangbuk-gu for residents who feel arduous when buying a Hanbok! In Gangbuk-gu, it is only being held in Suyu sam-dong.

 

 

 

The Hanbok Sharing Center is located on the second floor of the Suyu sam-dong Community Service Center.

Contributing to the proliferation of a sharing culture by sharing Hanbok, our lovely traditional clothing.

 

The Hanbok Sharing Project, which started to lessen the burden of residents and spread the culture of sharing, kicked off in 2015 and has existed for two years.

It started with the Hanbok donation by the people of Gangbuk-gu. In 2016, there were about 70 to 80 pieces of Hanbok that were gathered, and the number of donations gradually increased; currently, we have about 100 pieces.

 

Any resident who wishes to rent a Hanbok can borrow their desired design.

The rental period is one week, and is easily lent by filling out a simple information sheet, including your name and contact details, after presenting your ID. This project is only available in one area among the thirteen in Gangbuk-gu; as such, those who wish to rent a Hanbok must visit the Community Service Center in Suyu sam-dong.

We are initially lending the Hanbok to Gangbuk-gu residents, but locals from other gu (borough/ward) may also use the Hanbok Sharing Center at Gangbuk-gu.

Special memories made through sharing

 

The Hanbok Sharing Project has been widely known to the residents by publicizing it through the Gangbuk-gu Newsletter. As Hanbok is a great burden to be purchased, or usually comes with an expensive rental fee, a high satisfaction rate was gathered among the residents regarding the project.

Due to the characteristics of a Hanbok, as it is traditional clothing, many residents wish to borrow it during the holidays.

However, there are numerous people who wish to borrow during a special day, or to experience the joy of wearing a Hanbok; thus, residents visit us about two to three times a week for this purpose.

This project is joyfully continued as the borrower washes and cleans the Hanbok prior to its return. Each person is fervently working so that the first borrower who enjoyed wearing the beautiful Hanbok will be able to make the next as happy as them.

All of the residents participating in the Hanbok Sharing Project can actualize an enjoyable sharing activity through each person’s small efforts.

The Gangbuk-gu Hanbok Sharing Center is open from 9AM to 6PM on weekdays during the operating hours of the Community Service Center at Suyu sam-dong. For Hanbok for women, we have a jeogori (Korean traditional jacket) and skirt; for men, we also have a jeogori and pants. We don’t possess a norigae (Korean traditional ornaments worn by women), vest, beoseon (Korean traditional socks), and magoja (an outer coat worn by men over their jackets).

The Hanbok can be rented for a week from the day of visit, and is completely free. Please bring your ID for verification purposes. For more information, kindly contact the Suyu sam-dong Community Service Center and the Planning and Budget Division.

The Gangbuk-gu Hanbok Sharing Project is a very meaningful sharing economic activity since it started with the donation of Hanbok by individual residents. These donations have enabled the sharing project and actualize valuable sharing. The reason why we are able to continue the enjoyable circulation of sharing is due to the all residents’ active efforts participating in the Hanbok Sharing Center.
